Fat Tuesday Treat

Paczki - (pronunciation: punch key) pl. Paczki. n. Polish for jelly-filled doughnut rolled in powdered sugar. A special treat eaten on Fat Tuesday, even by those who do not intend to give up such treats for Lent.

Fat Tuesday always sparks a debate over who makes the best Paczki. I think it's the Home Bakery in Davison but I have some of friends will only buy them from Jablonski's Baker's Corner (authentic Polish bakery) in Burton.

What's the best filling? Bavarian cream -- it's like pudding inside a doughnut. I don't crave sweets so one Paczki a year is just about right, as long as it's Bavarian cream.

Personally I like the fruit fillings best, and am not too picky about who bakes them. One a year is not enough, but the rest of the year I can eat nutty donuts. BTW, you can get all the sweet treats and hot java you want at the new location of The Flinty Gaze, on Kearsley just west of Saginaw, a Paczki's throw from the UM-Flint campus when the wind is right. We promise our new digs will not explode.

In that case, save me a Bavarian Cream Paczki, Mitch! I'll stop by tomorrow. You sell Chai, too, right?

Not a big donut fan so I skipped the Punch Keys (love that phonetic spelling!).

What I really wanted to say is...I think it's very interesting there aren't more writing professors blogging from the U. Or perhaps there are and they're just not willing to tell us?

You mentioned in an earlier post that you're a writer. What genre do you work in?

And is it okay that I'm so nosy? lol

In addition to academic papers (mostly on The Lord of the Rings lately) I'm working on a reference books for mystery writers called A is for Arsenic: A Primer of Poisons for Mystery Writers. I co-authoring it with a friend who is a pharmacist and expert in toxicology. I think I'd also like to try writing a murder mystery somet time.

I don’t mind at all. Thanks for asking!
